Australia no earth-shaker

On July 26, I wrote on this blog:
... as I've said before, I doubt Australia, for all its hype, will be a global smash. It's bound to do well in Australia, but it would need significant international success to make back its budget and then some.
Now comes the news that the film has failed to set the US box office on fire. It made just US$3.4 million on its first day. It could still rally, but that's not a good sign.
PS: At the time of writing, Box Office Mojo says Australia has made US$10,935,000. The Reese Witherspoon film Four Christmases, released on the same day, is at US$28,230,000.

If I want Mill's and Boon, I'll get it at the newsagency.....not the cinema ! The trailer was pure M & B, and helped me to decide very early in the piece that I didn't want to see "Australia".
Oh...and then there's the fact that it's a Nicole Kidman movie ! Baz Luhrmann picked the right time to release his Thanksgiving turkey, didn't he ! Like the Thanksgiving turkey...everything that I read about this film tells me that it's stuffed ! And no pumpkin pie !

To be fair to the film, a friend of mine who has seen it - and is absolutely no Nicole Kidman fan - said it wasn't too bad. Still, what counts in the biz is how much it makes at the box office, and that's not looking good.
