Wak's final attack

They were the biggest thing in entertainment in Brisbane in the 1980s, and they've been back together and on the road for the past year or two. But soon music-and-comedy act Wickety Wak really will be calling it quits; and their official website has the group's final tour dates. However, according to their fan club, the band's members won't have much physical evidence to fuel their nostalgia in their dotage. Apparently, somebody at Channel 7 has thrown out all the film and tape of the band - which made several specials and fronted a "Love You Brisbane" campaign for the station. Wait, it gets worse. I'm told that just about everything Channel 7 Brisbane ever produced from 1959 to 1994 got trashed. While TV may have been regarded as an ephemeral medium in its early years, it's hard to imagine that this decision was made in the enlightened 1990s. I'd have thought that somebody would have realised the worth of the material that was tossed into the skip.

Brett, I have had (good not

Brett, I have had (good not bad) comments recently from people associated with Wickety Wak.

Over at my blog around a week ago, a anonymous commenter who identifies himself as "G" from Wickety Wak left the following..
"Hi there
I spoke to our dear friend [name edited] over the weekend. He said that there was a reunion late last year for channel 7 staff etc. 1 week prior some big wig executive from 7 in sydney visited btq. To find more automated and office space he ordered all films/tapes from 59-94 to be incincerated as the storage and room was an issue. NOTHING has been saved from btq 7 and thats the reason why 7 cannot show any footage from classic local productions. even at the reunion Eric said they had no footage to show ,just a slide show. A very sad day for BTQ 7 indeed!
There might be some limited back up tapes at the sound and video archive in Melbourne but only shows that went national and not many at that.
Cheers G

And then two weeks ago, the fansite left one too...
"Very sad but true. Wickety Wak have tried to contact seven and nothing happens in any way of a reply. All the footage from 7 that wasnt national was destroyed or binned. Unfortunately for the Wak all thier tv shows have gone and only a small selectio of thier masters are being held by the wicketywak fan club co ordinator for preservation purposes. its funny how nine will do shows on 'extra' about the wak and seven wont do anything! i think 7 has lost touch with local identities especially wickety wak who was the face of 7 for so many years.
now the wak are commming to an end and i have contacted 7 and they still will not do anything ! not even a flashback segement to appreciate all the history ww had with channel 7.
very sad indeed! [edited ...]
cheers

Tell me your opinion of this "Wak"ky occurance...

I had a comment a few

I had a comment a few days ago that was redirected from my old news.com.au blog, where I'd written about Wickety Wak more than a year ago, and that led to this item.

As for the Seven Brisbane

As for the Seven Brisbane "history destruction" Brett, I really hope Seven moved the "Love You Brisbane" promo tapes with Kim Durant and Simon Gallaher (like http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=1rRQxpyQ2X0 and http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=4o5RiLGOwRA ) to a safe place before the destruction happened. If they didn't, Seven won't have a very happy 50th next year...

I am not sure what shows

I am not sure what shows that aired on channel 7 you are seeking. i have a copy of the channel 7 tapes of "wak works 1,2 and 3 as well as other shows tacked onto the end. They are copies made by channel 7.
These are on vhs and if you wish to see them or copy same i would be pleased to supply them to you.

Regards
Glenn

Glenn, it's not me who's

Glenn, it's not me who's after them, but I have stored your phone number and, with you permission, will pass it on to those who may be seeking them.
