Something to Shout! about

It's not quite the real thing, but perhaps the closest you'll get to seeing the current production of Shout!, the stage musical about Australian rock icon Johnny O'Keefe, is to see the high-definition digital, surround-sound video version on the big screen at Brisbane's Cineplex cinemas. Reorded at Sydney's Lyric Theatre, it will play at the Balmoral, Victoria Point and South Bank complexes between May 15 and 21. Details are here. While I wish the exhibitors every success, I hope this sort of thing encourages people to love theatre so much that they want to see real, live actors perform at - say - a restored Regent Theatre.

There is only so much a video presentation can do.
There is only so much a fancy sound system can do.
There is only so much the old IMAX theatre at South Bank can do.
It cannot replicate a full house in a theatre watching a musical.

As usual, your comment is spot on ! More live theatre in Brisbane, somebody, please ! To quote HG Nelson, "too much is barely enough"!

I could not agree more. While seeing a show on video or via HD TV is a good option for people who can't get to the theatre, there's nothing like being in an audience of a live show. As the actors will tell you, no two performances are alike. Having said that, one of the functions of a restored regent could be to screen dance, opera, drama and musicals from around the world in downtime between shows or on Mondays, when the actors have the day off.
