Fabulous Phantom

The Phantom of the Opera has officially opened at the Lyric Theatre in Brisbane. I'm in Shanghai, and I wasn't there for the performance, so please forgive my ignorance if something unusual happened. If nothing unusual happened, and this production is still up to the standard of its opening night in Melbourne six months ago, it was a superb performance of a wonderful modern musical; Anthony Warlow exceeded expectations in a role that could have been written for him; and the show received a highly deserved, sustained standing ovation. Please tell me if I'm wrong.
PS: Here's my interview with Warlow for The Sunday Mail last year.

I hear that the lead artists understudies took to the stage on Saturday night. Audience was not happy, Jan !

Hmmm; I guess that's a risk you always take. Still, understudies ought to be very good, too.

I was there and was bitterly

I was there and was bitterly disappointed that Anthony Warlow was not performing - I am a massive fan and have wanted to see him as phantom for as long as i can remember. The show was fantastic though, and both Christine and Phantom were phenomenal singers. The audience didn't seem to care much about ana marina being missing, but the announcement about anthony got a massive reaction - felt real sorry for the understudy - but he got huge applause at the end, he was great.

That was because they were

That was because they were saving themselves for the opening on Sunday night. Saturday was considered a final dress rehearsal

While Matt is right that

While Matt is right that the stars were saving themselves for opening night, I don't think it quite fair on the audience for both the principals to be missing from the same performance. Still its great to hear from Erin that both the understudies did so well. To paraphrase 42nd Street, they came back stars!
